January 25, 2010
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College athletics director Brad Edwards announced the hiring of Catherine Dunagan as head women’s tennis coach on Monday.
“We are certainly pleased to have Catherine join our staff as head coach of our women’s tennis team,” Edwards said. “Her experience as a collegiate athlete and as a teaching pro will bode well for the future of the program.”
Dunagan will apply lessons she learned during a stellar playing career at Presbyterian College as well as tennis professional experience to help build on a talented women’s squad.
“I’m really excited to join the staff here at Newberry. I’m looking forward to building a program here with talented players and a disciplined team,” Dunagan said. “I’ve heard great things about Newberry and I can’t wait to work with the girls.”
Dunagan brings an impressive coaching résumé to Newberry in addition to her accolades as a player.
She most recently served as the Director of Tennis at Woodlands Country Club in Columbia, S.C., after working as the assistant tennis professional at the Rockbridge Club for two years.
As a tennis professional, Dunagan offered tennis lessons to adults and children, as well as organizing tennis camps and coaching high school league teams. She also holds a certification with the Professional Tennis Registry.
Dunagan certainly has familiarity with Newberry tennis from her playing days at former South Atlantic Conference member Presbyterian College. While at Presbyterian, Dunagan served as co-captain for two years and played at No. 1 in singles and doubles for three consecutive SAC championship-winning teams in 2005, 2006 and 2007, earning all-SAC honors all four years at PC. She was also named to the all-SAC tournament team from in 2004, 2005 and 2006, winning the SAC Tournament Most Valuable Player award in 2007.
The Presbyterian teams on which Dunagan played compiled a 24-1 record in South Atlantic Conference competition.
Dunagan received her degree from Presbyterian College in 2007 where she majored in Psychology and minored in Mathematics.
She lives in Clinton with her husband David.
