NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women’s tennis team wrapped up the 2009 season with a loss to Catawba, 8-1.
Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) earned Newberry’s only point with a close win over Kasia Zielinski, 9-8 (11-9). Mortimer finishes the regular season with a 5-8 singles record.
In doubles action, Mortimer and Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Jen Denyes and Zielinski (8-4); Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) and Denise Williams (Blackville, S.C.) lost to Nikiah Knox and Steffi Cook (8-1); and Allison and Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) were defeated by Kim Renspie and Candace Hall (8-1).
In other singles play, Crouch was defeated by Denyes (8-0); Cheesborough lost to Cook (6-0, 6-0); Allison Kyzer lost to Knox (8-4); Lindsay Kyzer dropped a match to Hall (8-0); and Williams fell to Renspie (8-0).
The Newberry College women’s tennis season has come to a close and the scarlet and gray have finished 0-13 overall and 0-8 in the South Atlantic Conference. Catawba, now headed to the SAC tournament, finishes its regular season 11-5 overall and 3-5 in the SAC.
