Newberry women swept up by Brevard Tornados, 9-0
Scarlet and gray take seventh loss of the season

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry College women’s tennis team was shut out on the road Monday afternoon by the Brevard Tornados, 9-0.
The Tornados not only won all three doubles points, they did so without dropping a single game. Kim Dixon and Lindsay Shaeffer took down Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.); Kayley Duval and Jennifer Nyman defeated Lindsay and Allison Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.); and Merek Slagle and Sara Douglas beat Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) and Denise Williams (Blackville, Ga.), all by scores of 8-0.
The feature match of the singles portion was by far the closest. In the top flight, Shaeffer won a tough battle over Mortimer (7-5, 6-3). The other five matches were not as close, with the scarlet and gray taking just two games combined.
Duval beat Crouch in the second flight (6-0, 6-1); Dixon was perfect against Cheesborough in the third; (6-0, 6-0), Nyman beat Allison Kyzer in the fourth spot (6-0, 6-1) Douglas took down Lindsay Kyzer at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0); and Slagle breezed over Williams at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).
The loss puts the Newberry College women’s tennis team at 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. They will hit the road once again on Tuesday to take on Georgia College and State at 2:30 pm. Brevard (13-3, 4-2 in the SAC) will go for its tenth straight win at home this Friday at 3 p.m.
