Newberry women fall to No. 20 Augusta State, 9-0
Scarlet and gray fall to 0-5 this season

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women’s tennis team dropped its fifth match of the season Wednesday by losing to No. 20 Augusta State at home, 9-0.
In singles play, Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) fell in a tightly contested match to Nathalia Rodrigues (7-6 (12-10), 6-2); Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Fernanda Chiaperini (6-0, 6-0); Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) lost to Marina Ferreria (6-0, 6-0); Allison Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Bianca Machado (6-1, 6-0); Lindsey Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) dropped her match against Camila Correa (6-0, 6-0); and Denis Williams (Blackville, Ga.) lost to Luiza Pires (6-1, 6-0).
In doubles action, the team of Mortimer and Crouch lost to Chiaperini and Rodrigues (8-1); the Kyzer sisters fell to Ferreria and Machado (8-0); and the duo of Cheesborough and Sam Armstrong (Barnwell, S.C.) lost to Correa and Pires (8-1).
The loss drops Newberry to 0-5 overall this season. The scarlet and gray will have a chance to earn their first victory this Friday when they compete against North Greenville on the road at 1 pm. Next up for Augusta State (11-3) will be a road match against Clayton State this Thursday at 1 pm.
