HICKORY, N.C. - The Lady Indians of Newberry College won their first South Atlantic Conference match of 2008 Tuesday, beating the Lenoir-Rhyne College Bears, 7-2. Newberry improves to 2-9 (1-3 SAC) on the season, while the Bears, losers of four straight, fall to 6-7 (2-5 SAC).
The Lady Indians began the match by winning two close doubles contests. Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Chanelle Clare (Nassau, Bahamas) clipped Kelli Ball and Kate Meiners, 8-5, and Bethany Poppe (Califon, N.J.) and Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario, Canada) beat Jennifer Binney and Ashley Halvorson by the same score.
The Bears picked up their first tally of the afternoon when Amanda Hunsucker and Bekah Rhoney dropped Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) and Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) 8-2.
The Lady Indians grabbed the match by the throat with a strong showing in singles play. Hartley started the victory barrage with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Meiners. Mortimer followed by breezing past Halvorson, 6-2, 6-3. Clare scored the clinching point with a 6-3, 7-5 victory, and Poppe added a point with 6-2, 6-2 win over Ball.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored its lone singles point when Rhoney beat Beckerle, 6-1, 6-0. But Newberry didn't lose the momentum for long, and Brittany Grooms (Sumter, S.C.) ended the match by taking down Hunsucker, 6-2, 6-2.
Fresh off their biggest win of the year, the Lady Indians will play the second match of their North Carolina swing Wednesday against Catawba at 1 p.m.
