No. 17 Bobcats sweep Lady Indians

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Lady Indian tennis team fell, 9-0, Wednesday to No. 17 Georgia College & State. The loss drops Newberry to 0-6, while the Lady Bobcats improve to 7-2.
GCSU started the afternoon by taking all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. Majorie Ceppo and Celine Martin took an 8-1 decision from Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario, Canada) and Bethany Poppe (Califon, N.J.), and Sofia Intriago and Diane Danna beat Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Chanelle Clare (Nassau, Bahamas) by the same score. The French duo of Bertille Lion and Marie Lefevre ended the doubles round with an 8-0 win over Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) and Brittany Grooms (Sumter, S.C.).
Singles play started with a close match, as Mortimer dropped the opening set to Martin 6-1, but rallied to send the second set into a tiebreaker. Martin took the extra points, however, 7-4, to finish with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory. The third flight also saw a tiebreak, with Danna winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 over Clare.
Newberry's next match is Friday at South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill College. The match starts at 3 p.m.
