Lady Indians fall to Lander, 8-1Doubles team of Clare and Mortimer score Newberry's only point February 29, 2008 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Lady Indians tennis squad is still in search of its first win of 2008 after falling 8-1 to the Lander University Bearcats Friday afternoon at the Cannon Tennis Courts. The Bearcats move above .500 with the win at 4-3. Newberry's only point came in No. 2 doubles, where Chanelle Clare (Nassau, Bahamas) and Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) took down Vuokko Vahatalo and Caitlin Fell, 8-5. Mortimer had the only three-set singles match, dropping a 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 decision to Fernanda Oliveira. Brittany Grooms (Sumter, S.C.) lost 6-3, 6-4 to Ana Luiza Zaia, while Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) lost her singles career debut 6-1, 6-0 to Melanise Newbold. After falling in doubles play, Fell came back to down Bethany Poppe (Califon, N.J.) 6-3, 6-1. Now 0-4, the Lady Indians host Lincoln Memorial Monday in their South Atlantic Conference opener of 2008. |
