Hartley scores singles victory for Lady Indians' lone point

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Lady Indians of Newberry College fell 8-1 to No. 26 Augusta State Monday afternoon in NCAA tennis action. The loss keeps the Lady Indians winless in NCAA matches at 0-3, while the Lady Jaguars ran their record to 5-1.
Newberry was competetive in just one doubles match, as Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Chanelle Clare (Nassau, Bahamas) fell just 8-4 to Laua Ferreira and Bianca Machado. Making her career debut, Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) teamed with Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) to fall 8-0 to Camila Correa and Luiza Pires.
Newberry's only point of the afternoon came in No. 2 singles, where Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario) upset Fernanda Chiaparini 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The win in Hartley's second singles victory of the young season.
Newberry Coach Juan Pablo Favero said Hartley's win was the most impressive of the season for his team. "After falling behind a set, Lauren showed tremendous heart to win her match," Favero said. "I'm proud of the effort she and the rest of our team showed this afternoon."
Newberry's quest for their first win of the season continues Wednesday when they host Lincoln Memorial in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams. The match starts at 2 p.m.
