Lady Indians participate in Chick-Fil-A Collegiate

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry College women's tennis team participated in the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Tennis Championships at Augusta State University last weekend. Autise Mortimer and Brittany Grooms each won first round singles' matches.

Mortimer, a sophmore from Nassau, Bahamas, defeated Queens University of Charlotte's Merissa Rock, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in the opening round. However she was defeated buy Augusta State's Nathalia Rodrigues, 4-6 and 1-6, in the second round.

Grooms, a junior from Sumter, S.C., defeated Wingate University's Pierce Dillard, 2-6, 6-4 and 7-6 (7-3), in the first round, but lost to Augusta State's Bianca Machado, 0-6 and 0-6, in the second round.

Other Lady Indians participating in the tournament were Bethany Poppe and Chanelle Clare. This was the Lady Indians' only fall tournament. Newberry will begin its spring season at Augusta State on February 6, 2008.
