Lady Indians participate in Chick-Fil-A CollegiateOctober 8, 2007 AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry College women's tennis team participated in the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Tennis Championships at Augusta State University last weekend. Autise Mortimer and Brittany Grooms each won first round singles' matches. Mortimer, a sophmore from Nassau, Bahamas, defeated Queens University of Charlotte's Merissa Rock, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in the opening round. However she was defeated buy Augusta State's Nathalia Rodrigues, 4-6 and 1-6, in the second round. Grooms, a junior from Sumter, S.C., defeated Wingate University's Pierce Dillard, 2-6, 6-4 and 7-6 (7-3), in the first round, but lost to Augusta State's Bianca Machado, 0-6 and 0-6, in the second round. Other Lady Indians participating in the tournament were Bethany Poppe and Chanelle Clare. This was the Lady Indians' only fall tournament.
