Lady Indians swept from first round of NCAA Tournament by No. 3 Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The third-ranked Lynn University women’s tennis team swept Newberry College 5-0 in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Friday morning. Lynn dropped just six doubles and seven singles games to advance to the second round on Saturday.
Opening the match with a clean doubles sweep, the Fighting Knights (22-3) senior duo of Leigh Shelton and Gedvile Norkute won 8-1 in the top position over Autise Mortimer and Lauren Hartley. The Indians (11-8) won the first game before dropping the next eight straight.
In the second spot, the No. 16 tandem of juniors Alexandra Schunk and Victoria Weltz of Lynn defeated Isabel Kreidler and Bethany Poppe 8-2 before LU’s Katerina Jiskrova and Katie Klibanoff-Dombrowski completed the sweep with an 8-3 decision in the third position over Chanelle Clare and Tanea Miller.
In singles, the Knights earned match points from No. 20 Schunk and Jiskrova in the second and third spots while every other LU player was up a set. Schunk won 6-1, 6-0 over Hartley and Jiskrova topped Kreidler 6-0, 6-0.
Unfinished matches included No. 18 Weltz up 6-2, 5-0 over Mortimer in the top spot, Norkute up 6-1, 3-0 over Miller in the fourth position, Shelton up 6-0, 4-1 over Clare in the fifth position and Christine Johnstone up 6-2, 2-0 in the sixth spot.
Lynn advances to face the winner of the match between Rollins College and Barry University later in the day. The second round match will be at 10 a.m. at the McCusker Sports Complex on the Lynn campus.
