Lady Indians qualify for NCAA Tournament
Newberry plays Lynn in first round
April 26, 2007
INDIANAPOLIS - The Newberry College women's tennis team has qualified for the NCAA Division II Team Championship, it was announced Monday. It will be the program's first appearance in the tournament since 2001, and the first in the current regional alignment.
The Lady Indians (11-7 overall) were runners-up in the South Atlantic Conference, their highest finish ever. They will face off against Lynn University (21-3 overall) in Boca Raton, Fla. on either May 3 or May 4. The times and dates for the first and second rounds have yet to be announced. The winner will face the victor of the match between Barry (8-6) and Rollins (21-4) in the second round of the tournament.
This achievement adds one more honor to an already outstanding year that saw Autise Mortimer named South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year and head coach David Staniford SAC Coach of the Year.
"This is a great recognition for our program," said Staniford. "We've been moving towards this for several years, even though people think we've come out of nowhere. Hopefully we can do this every year now because the winning attitude has been established. In tennis, confidence is a very big part of performing at the highest level, and we have that confidence now."
The round of 16 will be held on May 9, with the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals held on consecutive days at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., hosted by Rollins College and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
