Carson-Newman edges Newberry, 5-4, in women's tennisby Catalina Ontiveros, Sports Information Student Assistant March 31, 2006 NEWBERRY, S.C. - In the Lady Indians' closest match of the season, Carson-Newman prevailed in the deciding number six singles match and took the contest, 5-4, in college tennis action at R. Wright Cannon Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon. Carson-Newman evens both its overall record and South Atlantic Conference record at 5-5 and 2-2, respectively. Newberry moves to 8-7, 2-2 SAC. Bethany Poppe (Califton, N.J.) and Isabel Kreidler (Horb, Germany) earned Newberry's doubles point with a win at the number two spot against Kristi Kirkland and Emily Sorah, 9-8. In singles action, Poppe, Tanea Miller and Chanelle Clare (both from Nassau, Bahamas) won their matches at the number three, four, and five positions. Carson-Newman's Cassie Moulton won the day's final match over Brittany Grooms (Sumter, S.C.) to seal the SAC victory. Newberry will host Tusculum College tomorrow at 1 p.m. in its final home match of the season. Carson-Newman will play tomorrow against Presbyterian College at 10 a.m. in Clinton.
